Andrew has over 24 years experience of actuarial aspects of general insurance and has dealt with most classes of business commonly written. He has extensive experience of analysing the many special reserving issues that have arisen during the 80’s and subsequent decades. In particular, Andrew has reviewed reserves for asbestos and pollution related claims for a wide variety of Lloyd’s syndicates, London Market insurers and reinsurers.
Andrew graduated from Cambridge University in 1978 where he read mathematics and engineering. After university he worked for the EMI group for two years before joining the actuarial profession in 1980. For the next 13 years Andrew was employed by consulting actuaries Bacon and Woodrow. He qualified as an actuary in 1985 and was promoted to associate partner at Bacon & Woodrow in 1990. During his time at Bacon and Woodrow, Andrew gained experience in a wide range of general insurance projects including appraisal valuations for mergers and acquisitions, rating reviews, statistical analysis of reserves, reinsurance and business planning. Andrew was responsible for the design and development of Bacon & Woodrow's statistical claim reserving software "Micro-CROS".
In 1993, Andrew left Bacon & Woodrow to become a founder partner of English Wright and Brockman (later to become EMB) and has continued to act as consultant to a wide variety of London Market companies and syndicates, mainly in the fields of reserving and litigation support. Andrew was heavily involved with the Equitas project and was responsible for the cash flow patterns used as a basis for the discounting element of the syndicate reserves. Andrew has held certificates to act as a Lloyd’s Syndicate Actuary every year since the certificate was introduced in 1999 and has provided statements of actuarial opinion for a wide variety of Lloyd’s syndicates.
Andrew has acted as independent expert to consider Business Transfers under Section 109 of the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 and has also reported on “Plausible Worst Case” reserves for change of ownership purposes.
Andrew has been an active member of the Institute of Actuaries general insurance study group serving on working parties on exposure, retention level analysis, variance in claim reserves and the Institute of Actuaries Claims Reserving Manual. He has spoken at many seminars on statistical claims reserving including the Casualty Actuarial Society's loss reserving seminars in 1992 and 2002. Andrew is at the forefront of developing improved reserving methodologies, in particular, the analysis of reserve variability.
While at EMB, Andrew has been responsible for the design and development of the “ResQ” loss reserving software package; the market leader for actuarial reserving software. Andrew is also responsible for the statistical pricing software “EMBLEM”, the UK market leader for personal lines multivariate analysis and pricing software.
