Dave Otto FCAS MAAA
 Dave Otto is a Managing Director with EMB America LLC. Dave has over 14 years experience and joined EMB America after an 11-year career in actuarial consulting beginning with Coopers & Lybrand in 1992 and subsequently with The Kilbourne Company in 1994.
Dave’s major practice areas include Loss Reserving, Predictive Modeling and Expert Testimony. Particular examples of Dave’s past experience include:
Loss Reserving Experience • Loss reserving and funding analysis for captive, self-insured and other alternative risk vehicles. • Loss reserving variability assessment. • Implementation of EMB’s loss reserving software, ResQ. • Training on loss reserving and reserve variability methodologies. • Audit support and reconciliation of analyses performed by different actuaries. • Impact analysis of various reinsurance options.
Predictive Modeling Experience • Implementation of predictive modeling software for large and small insurers. • Shadow Projects (i.e. extensive training and peer review on a particular project) for both personal and commercial lines business. • Training on predictive modeling techniques and applications. • Commercial lines loss development using predictive modeling. • Implementation of predictive modeling results through pricing, underwriting scoring, tiering and schedule rating. • Multivariate impact and competitive analysis.
Expert Testimony Experience • Trial testimony involving insurance tax disputes. • Depositions involving actuarial malpractice, insurance and reinsurance disputes, valuations, rate filings and statistics. • Expert reports and/or testimony in over 20 cases (Curriculum Vitae of cases is available upon request).
Dave graduated from the University of Illinois in 1991 with a major in Actuarial Science. He became a member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA) in 1996 and a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS) in 1998.
Dave is very active on industry and professional committees. He currently serves on the Casualty Committee of the Actuarial Standards Board. In the past, he served as a member of the Advisory Panel of CRUSAP (Critical Review of the US Actuarial Profession), the Committee on Professionalism Education and the Examination Committee of the Casualty Actuarial Society.
Dave also co-authored an actuarial paper, “Best Estimate Loss Reserving: An Actuarial Perspective” (CAS Forum: Fall 1998), and has been a frequent speaker on professionalism and predictive modeling topics at actuarial seminars and meetings.
