Peter Matthews BSc, FIA, MAAA - Partner


Peter is a member of the American Academy of Actuaries, a fellow of the Institute of Actuaries and has a first class Degree in Mathematics from Exeter University. He is a founding partner of EMB Consultancy LLP, an actuarial firm specialising purely in the Property and Casualty insurance sector.

From 1975 to 1981, Peter spent his early career in the life and pensions industry. Since 1981 he has devoted his career to the London Market and the international reinsurance industry. Peter established his own actuarial firm, Matthews Consultants, in 1987, which subsequently merged with English Wright & Brockman in August 1997 to form English Matthews Brockman, which is now known as EMB Consultancy.

Peter has provided reserving advice to many Lloyd’s syndicates and London Market companies and has represented a large insolvency on the KWELM Reserving Committee. He is the Scheme Actuary for Chancellor, Stockholm Re (Bermuda), Scan Re, Mentor (UK) and Pacific and General.

Peter is the peer review actuary overseeing the actuarial work performed on Fremont Insurance Company (UK) Limited, ICS Reinsurance Private Ltd, RMCA Re Limited, UIC, The Charter Reinsurance Co Limited and Municipal General Insurance Company.

He is the Scheme Adjudicator for the following Schemes of Arrangement; Reliance National Insurance (UK), Anglo American Insurance Company Limited, St. Helen’s Trust (The Prudential Assurance Company Limited, Pearl Assurance PLC, Elders Insurance Company Limited, Hiscox Insurance Company Limited, and The World Marine & General Insurance Company PLC), various subsidiaries of the ING group (Seven Provinces, Transatlantica, Nationale Nederlanden, Nationale Nederlanden Internationale and Mercantile Mutual Insurance (Australia)), Scottish and Commonwealth, FIGRE Limited, Osiris Insurance Limited, Crombie Insurance Company (UK) Limited, Nichido Fire & Marine Insurance Company Limited, La Metropole S.A, Ludgate Insurance Company Limited, Black Sea and Baltic General Insurance Company Limited, ARIG Insurance Company Limited, Folksam International Insurance Company (UK) Limited, Trent Insurance Company Limited, Moorgate Insurance Company Limited, Gordian Run-off (UK) Limited, Aviation & General, Scottish Lion and Lion City.

Peter has provided litigation support on a number of high profile reinsurance related matters in the USA, Bermuda, Australia and the UK. In the past he has been retained by various Lloyd’s syndicates, The Bermuda Fire & Marine Insurance Company Limited, Odyssey Re, Ernst &Young, Turner & Newall (T&N), Motability, AIG and ACE Ltd.

Peter has advised many companies on the subject of commutations and has been involved in many large commutations, advising both inwards and outwards reinsurers. In 1990, Peter was chairman of an actuarial working party that wrote one of the first papers on commutations. He has spoken on the subject of commutations in London, Bermuda, Europe and the and of reinsurance bad debt at the September 2000 Casualty Actuarial Society reserving seminar. Peter was a member of the Institute of Actuaries World Trade Centre committee and is currently a member of the General Insurance Reserving Issues Taskforce committee.
