Raj Ahuja, BSc, FIA - Partner
Raj read Actuarial Science at City University, graduating in 1990 with a First Class degree and the Murray Johnstone Prize for the third year. In 1990 Raj joined Bacon & Woodrow [B&W] (consulting actuaries) to work in their general insurance department. Whilst at B&W Raj developed an aptitude for managing clients and making sure that actuarial work product was correctly communicated. Having specialised there in high risk areas such as Lloyds and reinsurance he left B&W in 1993 and joined MCRA a specialist Actuarial Reinsurance firm headed by Peter Matthews. Whilst at MCRA Raj continued to work for ILU companies, LUC companies and Lloyds syndicates. Raj was offering reserving services and supporting Peter Matthews on his expert witness and commutation projects.
In 1996 he moved on to CNARe one of the biggest LUC players with an established actuarial presence supported by US trained actuaries. Raj saw this as a great opportunity to complete his training in the areas of pricing reinsurance and working with underwriters to understand their needs and the pressure they are under when writing contracts. He was also seconded to various cedants and worked through the exam course that US actuaries have to follow. Whilst not sitting the exams he is fully conversant with the comprehensive techniques used in the market by Casualty actuaries. Raj had particular responsibility for speciality lines that covered Medical malpractice, Directors and Officers and E&O. The majority of the portfolio he covered was US$ based but certain lines crossed into the market. Raj left in 1999 as Assistant Vice President of Pricing.
Raj joined EMB in the summer of 1999 where he was a consultant to the London market. His main areas of expertise are:
· Reserving for reinsurance and commercial lines business (Non-Marine, Marine and Aviation)
· Lloyd’s of London and the London Market
· Supporting Underwriter in their frontline role
· Advising on Legal disputes involving Reinsurers
Raj was appointed Partner in May 2001 and has special responsibility for PrisEMB and supporting underwriters. He has been a member of the London Market Actuaries Group since 1998 and has held a Lloyd's practicing certificate (available only to the most senior London market reserving actuaries) since 2000.
Raj has given talks for the Casualty Actuarial Society in the and for various conferences. He has been attending GIRO (The UK actuarial profession’s annual general insurance conference) since 1993 and has also attended many other insurance and reinsurance conferences in the UK, Europe, Bermuda and the USA.
