Richard Rodriguez FIA - Partner
Richard graduated with an upper second-class honours degree in Mathematics from Queen Mary College London in 1987 and become a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries in 1992. Richard is also a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries in Ireland. Richard is a signing actuary for Lloyd’s syndicates and Irish captives, direct writers and reinsurers. Over the years Richard has worked in many different actuarial capacities in the insurance industry; as an insurance regulator, a peer review actuary, an internal and external actuary advising on pricing, reserving, reinsurance, new business start-ups, management information systems and the sale and purchase of insurance businesses.
Richard joined EMB in 2002 as a senior consultant. He heads up the London office of EMB and spends most of his time working on financial modelling and London Market assignments. The financial modelling assignments have covered business planning, the pricing of commercial contracts, capital adequacy and allocation and reinsurance purchase. For London market clients the work has entailed commercial pricing, reserving e.g. Lloyd’s actuarial opinions, and the determination of reinsurance structures.
Prior to joining EMB, Richard was a senior manager in the Non-Life actuarial department of Ernst & Young where he worked on a wide range of assignments for a significant number of London and Company market clients including Lloyd’s syndicates. His work involved the pricing of inward and outwards business, commutations, statutory reserving e.g. Lloyd’s Statement of Actuarial Opinions, actuarial support to the audit function, the design of management information systems, due diligences and the implementation of stochastic asset liability models and Risk Based Capital (RBC) systems. Whilst at Ernst & Young Richard was seconded, for nearly eighteen months, to the Corporation of Lloyd’s where he was the “acting” Lloyd’s actuary at first and then later the actuary responsible for the Lloyd’s RBC system. Part of Richard’s role at Ernst & Young and at Lloyd’s was the peer review of the work undertaken by other actuaries to ensure that the reserving methodologies and assumptions applied were appropriate for the purpose.
Prior to joining Ernst & Young Richard worked in the UK Non-Life Actuarial department of Commercial Union where he was involved in the reserving of personal and commercial lines business, the pricing of commercial liability contracts and reinsurance arrangements, the monitoring and planning of personal and commercial lines business and the assessment of potential company acquisitions.
Prior to working at Commercial Union Richard worked at Pearl Assurance, where he was a Life and Pensions marketing and pricing actuary. His work entailed the designing, pricing, valuation and marketing of Life and Pensions insurance contracts. Whilst performing this work Richard used stochastic as well as traditional actuarial methods to determine the asset liability profile of the business over future periods of time. The role also involved the design and implementation of management information systems as well as the training of in-house staff and the sales force on the products launched.
